M. Jeanne Dix, 90, of McKeesport, Pennsylvania departed this life peacefully Saturday, February 8, 2020 at UPMC East, Monroeville, PA. She was born July 8, 1929, daughter of the late William and Katherine Hemmons Dix. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Carrie Ann Dix James and Patricia Vincenty; brother, William Dix and beloved nephew, Billy Chris James.

Jeanne lived in McKeesport for the majority of her life. After graduating McKeesport High School, she attended Bennett College in Greensboro, North Carolina for a short time and went on to obtain her bachelor’s degree at Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio.  While there, she joined Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. in 1953 at the historic Zeta Chapter, where she served as the Anti-Basileus.

Ms. Dix was employed by the Pittsburgh Public School District for over 40 years. She began her career as a primary teacher at Miller Elementary School. She earned her master’s in Counselor Education from University of Pittsburgh in 1969. She continued her career as a counselor at Fifth Avenue, Brashear and Carrick High Schools. She enriched the lives of students, challenging them to pursue their dreams until she retired in 1992. Jeanne also pursued additional studies in counselor education at California University of Pennsylvania and was enrolled in a doctorate program at the University of Pittsburgh, where she served as site supervisor for the university’s counselor interns.

In service to her community, she was the former Y-teen program director at the McKeesport YWCA and the Princeton, NJ YWCA. After returning to McKeesport, she served as past President and Trustee at the YWCA. She organized the YWCA’s After School program at George Washington Elementary School. She was involved with the McKeesport Area School District’s mentoring program, worked with the ASIST tutoring program sponsored by McKeesport Altrusa, where she served as past President and board Vice President. She served three terms as President for the Semper Fidelis Club. Jeanne was a member of the McKeesport Branch NAACP, and she also served on the board of directors for the LaRosa Boys and Girls Club, the McKeesport Symphony Orchestra, and the Mon Yough Riverfront Entertainment and Cultural Council.

Her life reflected on her belief that education is the key to success. She was the President and Recording Secretary for the Pennsylvania State Federation of Negro Women’s Clubs, Inc., and served as acting director of A Developmental Journey Extended Child Care & Learning facility. She was inducted into the Pennsylvania State Federation of Negro Women’s Clubs Hall of Fame, honored by the Hand-In-Hand scholarship organization, and was a 1999 inductee into the McKeesport High School Alumni and Friends Association Hall of Fame.

Jeanne accepted Christ at an early age. She remained a faithful member of Bethlehem Baptist Church for over 84 years. Jeanne served in several capacities, she was a member of the Missionary Union, former Sunday School Superintendent, church pianist, and served on the Noah’s Ark Community Center Board.

Jeanne is survived by her nephew, Steve Vincenty of San Diego, CA; grandniece and nephew, Patricia and Christopher Vincenty of Rhode Island; godson, Robert A. (Robin) Waters of Forward Township; goddaughter, Alicia Jeanne Waters of Baltimore, MD; long time mentee, Anica (Bobby) Jones of McKeesport, PA, and a hosts of cousins and friends who will miss her dearly.
