Obituaries | The Tube City Almanac | April 13, 2020

Mrs. Frances Brown Booker, 93, of Clairton, Pa departed this life peacefully on Saturday, April 4, 2020, in Manor Care Whitehall, PA. She was born May 3, 1926, in Clairton. She was the third of twelve children born to Deacon Richard and Sister Agganora Pipkin Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years Deacon Joseph Booker, her parents, son, Dr. Joseph Booker, daughter, Marlene "Cricket" Moore, brothers, Elder James Willie Brown, Dr. Richard Brown, Jr., Dr. Charles Curtis Brown, Sr., and Elder Robert Lewis "Cee" Brown.

She was a lifelong member of the Clairton Church of God in Christ, later renamed Gethsemane C.O.G.I.C, having been born the year the church started in Lincoln way. She served as a Sunday School teacher and church secretary under then Pastor Elder Ithiel C. Clemmons, She was more recently appointed Church Mother under current Pastor and her youngest brother, Dr. Melvin Brown, Sr.

Frances was a 1944 graduate of Clairton High School and a retired employee of the Stated of Pennsylvania with 35+ years of service as a caseworker for the Department of Welfare. She had many gifts and talents, including the ability to say her alphabet backwards. She was an avid crafter; she crocheted and gave away beautiful handmade potholders and dishcloths to many. She had what she called her "phone ministry" to call and check on and encourage the many people she would often think of and pray for. She was the family historian, remembering dates and events as well as all the birthdays. She called every family member on their birthday to give them her wishes. She was also a dynamic cook and baker and was known to bake delicious pound cakes, sweet potato pies, and homemade rolls from scratch.

The highlight of her life was being a child of God. She loved Sunday School, loved praising God (she was known for beating her cymbals in service and making a joyful noise). She loved leading devotional service, and could still harmonize while singing, and was, in fact, a member of a female quartet in her youth called the "The Queens of Harmony." Two things she always said was that she was running for her life, and it was Holiness or Hell.

She leaves to forever cherish her memory, her children, Richard Lewis and Mavis Elaine both of Clairton, 3 brothers, Elder Carl (Yasmin) Brown of Grindstone, PA, elder Warren K (Esther) Brown of Columbus, GA, Dr Melvin (Emily) Brown of Clairton, PA. One sister, Mrs Mabel Brown Bryant of Ssn Dimas, CA, two grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren. Five sisters in love, Mrs Leola Brown, Mrs Sophie Brown and Mrs Charlotte Brown all of Cleveland, OH, Mrs Martha Brown of San Diego, CA, and Mrs Ernestine Booker of Clairton, PA. Many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and many friends, all of whom she loved dearly.
