Carl O. Benson, 99, formerly of White Oak, currently of Chevy Chase, MD, died Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Five Star Premier Residence.  Born in McKeesport, July 13, 1922, son of the late Charles O. and Ellen A. Gustafsson Benson, husband of the late Mary E. Powers Benson, he is survived by his wife, Woodene Bell Merriman; son, Carl J. Benson of Elizabeth Township; 2 daughters, Mary Ellen Benson of Monroeville and Christine Imgrund of Peters Township; 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.  Mr. Benson was a founder and owner of King’s Family Restaurants, was a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, and served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during WWII.  Friends will be received in the Hunter Funeral Home, Inc., 1600 Coursin Street, McKeesport, PA  15132 on Friday, July 30 from 3-6 PM.  A service will be held in the funeral home on Saturday, July 31, 2021 at 11:00 AM with the Rev. Dr. Moni McIntyre officiating.  Interment will follow in Mount Vernon Cemetery.  The family suggests contributions to the Carnegie Library of McKeesport.

 


John M. "Jack" Walkmeyer

John M. “Jack” Walkmeyer, Jr., 76, of North Huntingdon, died Friday, July 2, 2021, at UPMC Presbyterian. Born in Pittsburgh on June 30, 1945, he was the son of the late John M. and Helen A. Chada Walkmeyer.  Husband of the late Carol Cronin Walkmeyer, he is survived by his daughter, Jennifer (Brandon) Diehl of Greensburg, 2 sons, John M. (Michelle) Walkmeyer of Murrysville and Sean M. (Amy) Walkmeyer of Houston, TX; 2 granddaughters, Shana Walkmeyer and Rachel Diehl; 2 grandsons, Austin and Dominik Walkmeyer; 3 nieces, Lori Tuite, Dana Kelly, and Terri Finch; sister, Roberta Connelly of California; and friend and companion, Linda DiLucente of Glassport.  A U.S. Army veteran, he was a mail clerk at the Pittsburgh Distribution Center of the U.S. Postal Service.  Friends will be received in the Hunter Funeral Home, Inc., 1600 Coursin Street, McKeesport, PA  15132 on Tuesday from 12-2 and 5-8 PM.  The family suggests contributions to Hospaws of Youngwood or All But Furgotten of North Huntingdon.

Kenneth E. Gleditsch, 77, of McKeesport, died peacefully at home on Saturday, June 12, 2021.  Born in McKeesport, February 12, 1944, he was the son of the late George Herbert and Edith Glaub Gleditsch.  A retired butcher, he served his country in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.  He loved to tend his garden and sit on the front porch, loved to cook, and loved his daughter, Kendra and his dog, Princess.  He is survived by his wife, Isabel Madera Gleditsch; his daughter, Kendra (Kurt) Szymczak of Munhall; brothers, Herb Gleditsch of Indiana, PA and Carl Gleditsch of Columbus, OH; nieces and nephews, Stephen Gleditsch of Washington, DC, Christopher Gleditsch of Washington, DC, Jason Gleditsch of Philadelphia, Kathleen Gleditsch of Raleigh, NC, Michael Wagner of McKeesport, and Janelle Wagner of McKeesport.  Friends will be received in the Hunter Funeral Home, Inc., 1600 Coursin Street, McKeesport, PA  15132 on Thursday, June 17. 2021 from 2-4 PM.

Robert C. “Rob” Sykes, 74, of White Oak, died peacefully at his home on Thursday, June 10, 2021.  Born in McKeesport, June 1, 1947, he was the son of the late Harold C. and Jean A. West Sykes.  He is survived by his special companion and wife, Candace Rose Hassko; sister, Barbara Sykes (John) Woods of White Oak; niece, Ashley Bevan; nephew, Justin Woods; great nieces, Aubrey Bevan and Erin Bevan; brother-in-law, Frank M. (Guadalupe) Hassko.  A graduate of McKeesport High School, he served his country as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War.  He was a retired customer service representative for DISH in McKeesport.  At his request, there will be no visitation or service.  Private interment will take place in the Cemetery of the Alleghenies.  Hunter Funeral Home, Inc., 1600 Coursin Street, McKeesport, PA  15132 is in charge of arrangements.

Frank Hassko, 83, died Friday, March 26, 2021, at home.  Of McKeesport, he was born April 19, 1937 in Budapest, Hungary, son of the late Rose Hassko.  He was the owner of Residential Roofing Company, and is survived by his daughter, Candace Hassko of White Oak and his son, Frank Hassko of Cancun, Mexico.  A private graveside service and interment will be held Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at McKeesport & Versailles Cemetery.  Hunter Funeral Home, Inc., 1600 Coursin Street, McKeesport, PA  15132 is in charge of arrangements.

Rachel “Preppy” Laverne Conrad, 83, died Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at The Grove in North Huntingdon, PA. 

Born in McKeesport, April 8, 1937, she was the daughter of the late Joseph L. and Mollie Weiss Gonzales.  Wife of the late Harry Hobson and the late Harry Addison Conrad, Jr., she was preceded in death by sisters Rosalie Hansen, Miriam Diggs, and Esther Micklo, and brother Joseph Gonzales, Jr. 

She is survived by 3 sons, Jeffrey, Harry, and Bernie, loving grandchildren, sisters, Sylvia Hannen, Doris Amatuzzi, and Linda Micklo, brothers, David, Howard, Albert, and Carl Gonzales. 

Rachel was the manager of Housing Opportunities, Inc., a democratic committee woman in the 7th ward, was associated with Vienna Bakery, and was the matriarch of the family.

Sherman E. Elias, 90, of White Oak, died Monday, December 14, 2020 at Sinai Hospital, Baltimore, MD.  Born in McKeesport, July 19, 1930, he was the son of the late Martin and Beatrice Davis Elias. 

Husband of the late Arlene Gland Elias, he is survived by his daughters, Ruth (Jacob) Gordon of Baltimore, MD and Mimi (Mitch) Maizlech of Israel, grandchildren, Naomi (Aryeh) Ho, Aaron Gordon, Shui Maizlech, Sammy Maizlech, Sarah Baila (Tzvi) Friedman, and the late David Gordon, great grandchildren, Meir Ho, Dovid Simcha Ho, and Ezra Ho, and by brother, Ray Elias of California. 

Mr. Elias was a member of the Congregation Gemilas Chesed and the Jewish War Veterans was a Korean War Veteran, serving in the U.S. Air Force. 

He was an insurance broker and real estate agent associated with the Lee Nationwide Agency of White Oak.

Reisse Jeanne Weiss, 92, of McKeesport, died Monday, November 16, 2020 at Canterbury Place.  Born in McKeesport, PA on May 23, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Louis A. and Frances Klein Palley.  Wife of the late Nathan Weiss, she is survived by her brother, Jon N. Palley of Meriden, CT, also by nieces and nephews.  Mrs. Weiss was a retired mental health advocate for the national, state, and regional Alliance for the Mentally Ill.  She was a member of the Temple B’nai Israel, life member of Hadassah, life member of Women International (formerly B’nai Brith), and the Jewish War Veterans Auxiliary.  A graveside service will be held Wednesday, November 18, 2020 at 1:00 PM at the Temple B’nai Israel Cemetery with Rabbi Howard Stein officiating.  Hunter Funeral Home, Inc., 1600 Coursin Street, McKeesport, PA  15132 is in charge of arrangements.

Bernice B. Croushore, 70, of White Oak, died Friday, November 13, 2020 at Jefferson Hospital.  Born in McKeesport, February 24, 1950, she was the daughter of the late Roy J. Bohn, Dominic Schettino, and Elizabeth G. “Betty” Petrak Schettino. She is survived by her husband, George W. Croushore II; 2 daughters, Jennifer (Gary) Schafer of Jefferson Hills and Rebecca (Phillip) Cicco of North Huntingdon; 4 grandchildren; her sister, Helen Amanda Bohn of North Huntingdon; brother, Earl Bohn of Ben Avon; and was the sister in law of Jack and Linda Coushore of White Oak.  A private family viewing and service will be held Tuesday in the Hunter Funeral Home, Inc., 1600 Coursin Street, McKeesport, PA  15132 with the Rev. Sue Washburn officiating.  Interment will follow in St. Clair Cemetery, Greensburg.

William D. “Bill” Oliver, 75, of North Versailles, died Friday, September 25, 2020 at home.  Born in McKeesport, May 27, 1945, he was the son of the late Hugh David and Margaret Macey Oliver.  He was preceded in death by his brothers, James Oliver and Richard Oliver.  He is survived by his wife, Mary M. Hess Oliver; 2 sons, William C. (Kim) Oliver of North Versailles and Jeffrey D. (Melissa) Oliver of Penn Hills; 3 granddaughters, Kaitlin Oliver, Eliana Oliver, and Dakota Toughlinn; and his sister, Mary Louise Trapana of North Huntingdon.  Mr. Oliver was a US Army veteran, a 53 year member of the Smedley D. Butler Post #701, American Legion, and was a graduate of McKeesport High School.  He was a courier for Family Home Health, a refueler at the Allegheny County Airport, and worked at Lea’s Flower Shop in East McKeesport.  Friends will be received in the Hunter Funeral Home, Inc., 1600 Coursin Street, McKeesport, PA  15132 on Wednesday, September 30, 2020 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM.  A service will be held in the funeral home on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at 2:00 PM.  Interment with military honors will follow on Friday, October 2, 2020 at 12:30 PM at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
