Elizabeth "Betty" Jane Swank, 101, of Elizabeth Township, passed away Saturday, September 6, 2025 at Point Pleasant Retirement Community in North Versailles.  Betty was born August 23, 1924 in McKeesport and was the daughter of the late Thomas R. and Elizabeth (Wohl) McCusker.  She was the wife of the late Merwyn Swank, who passed away October 3, 1989.  She was a former member of St. Patrick Church in Christy Park, where she was apart of The Christian Mothers and Ladies of Charity Groups and was a current member of Sts. Joachim and Ann Parish, where she attended St. Michael Church. She graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with her Bachelors Degree.  Betty worked as an auditor for The Department of Defense and was also an avid painter.  She will be greatly missed.

Ethel S. Balas, age 92, of North Huntingdon, PA, passed away on Friday, September 5, 2025. She was born in McKeesport, PA on November 7, 1932 and was the daughter of the late Harry Forgie and Elizabeth Mitchell Spittal. Ethel was a 1950 graduate of McKeesport Area High School and received two master’s degrees in arts and teaching, as well as in education, from the University of Pittsburgh. She also obtained an administrator’s certificate from Duquesne University. She was employed as English teacher at McKeesport Area School District and later retired as the school administrator. She was a member of Mon Yough Community Services, Meals on Wheels, and the Salvation Army Auxiliary. She was also a Vestry Member and Eucharistic Minister at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in McKeesport, PA.

Marla Jean Kalning, age 90 of North Huntingdon, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2025. Marla was born on January 4, 1935, a daughter of the late Howard Hornfeck and Ada Carlson Hornfeck. She was a member of Sampson's Mills Church in White Oak. Marla was a graduate of McKeesport High School and also McKeesport Nursing School. During her career, she practiced as a company nurse and a registered nurse at McKeesport Hospital. Marla enjoyed many artistic hobbies, including watercolor painting, drawing, ceramic crafting, and photography. In her free time, she volunteered with the Norwin Art League and the Carnegie Museum on the Move. Marla also enjoyed U.S. and international travel and had a love of learning taking online classes until recently and her dogs brought her great joy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband Laimon Kalning in 2003. Marla is survived by two sons, Greg Kalning (wife Madalyn) and Doug Kalning (wife Diane), two daughters, Lisa Howerton (husband Scott), and Linda Kalning, and six grandchildren, Mitchell Kalning (wife Cati), Matthew Kalning (wife Courtney), Marshall Kalning (Madison), Jimmy Howerton (Sofia), Nicholas Kalning, and Jacob Kalning. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 10, from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at the James W. Shirley Funeral Home, 176 Clay Pike, North Huntingdon.  If joining us to celebrate Marla's life, feel free to wear pastel colors in honor of her love of art and flowers. Thomas V. Morrissey, age 80, of White Oak, died peacefully on August 31, 2025. Born December 21, 1944, in Mt. Pleasant, he was the son of the late Thomas V. and Sadie (Bergan) Morrissey. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Norene (Kozdras), daughter Kim Kennedy (Tim) and preceded in death by his son Tom Morrissey, Jr. He was a grandfather to four beautiful granddaughters; Emily, Norah, Kelly, and Shannon. He was also 'Uncle T' to many nieces and their families.

Tom's dedication to service extended throughout his life. A proud Army Veteran, he served his country in Germany during the Vietnam War, embodying the values of courage and resilience. After his time in the military, he brought his work ethic to the U.S. Steel, where he contributed at both the National Tube Works and Christy Park. Later in life, he took on the role of Security Officer at the Kane Community Living Center in McKeesport, a position he held until his retirement, ensuring the safety and well-being of those around him.

David (Dave) L. Schiavo, age 74 of McKeesport, passed away on Friday, August 29, 2025 in UPMC East. Born October 10, 1950 in McKeesport, he was a son of the late Salvatore and Sarah E. (Gault) Schiavo. A truck or bus driver by trade, David enjoyed everything car-related, including his favorite sport of NASCAR. A tour bus driver with DeBolt Bus Company for 13 years, David was the teller of “this one bus trip I had…”stories, odd bits of trivia knowledge and appreciated listening to his favorite band, Pink Floyd. He will be most remembered as a devoted husband, father, and "Pap-Pap" wholoved his whole family. He is survived by his wife Donna (Novacek) Schiavo; his daughter Hilary (Kristofer) Happe of Baldwin; his grandsons Lucas and Colin; his sisters Marie (Tom) Rose of South Park, Joanne (Harold) Fetch of McKeesport, and Barb (Mike) Duffy of McKeesport; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Jim (Delma) Novacek ofWindsor, PA, and also 11 nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, David waspreceded in death by his sister Sally E. Gooch and his brother Salvatore L. Schiavo.
