Joseph M. Lugares, age 89 of Versailles Boro, passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2022 at UPMC McKeesport. Born March 8, 1933 in McKeesport, he was the son of Joseph and Mary (Brtovic) Lugares. Joseph was a Korean War Veteran in the US Army. He managed the employment office for U. S. Steel National and Duquesne Works, as well as a multitude of other assignments within the operation of both plants. For over 25 years, Joe was employed with the famous Duquesne University Tamburitzans, where he acted as both tour and company manager in addition to overseeing daily business and stage operations. He was a member and past president of the Croatian Fraternal Union Lodge #146 in Versailles Borough. In addition to this duty, he also served as club steward during the 70's and 80's, and past president and member of the Men's Club. In the 1970's and early 80's, Joe was a member of Versailles Borough Council, serving his community in various capacities.

Carole Steimer Pastrick, 91, of Duquesne, died Monday, Oct. 10, 2022, at home, after a wonderful life filled with love for family, friends, and adventures. An excellent seamstress, Carole designed and created many bridal and bridesmaids’ gowns, and prom dresses; contributed to the costumes of the Junior Tamburitzans of Duquesne and the PIFAI Tamburitzans of Pittsburgh; and created outfits for the Pirate Parrot in the mid-1980s. A member of St. Joseph Church in Duquesne, she was a longtime member of its choir, member of the Christian Mothers, past president of the Easter Seals Auxiliary, and a former employee of JoAnn Fabrics.
In her later years, Carole enjoyed traveling with family and friends including several trips to Alaska and Europe, but her favorite place would always be Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio. She especially enjoyed time there beginning in 1939 with her Mum and Dad, brothers, sister, cousins, and friends, and later with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.
A daughter of the late Edward and Mary Weber Steimer, she was born March 28, 1931, in Duquesne. Wife of the late Albert F. Pastrick who died in 2008, she was preceded in death by a son, Edward (Ted) Pastrick in 1997. She is survived by children, Jennifer Pastrick of Confluence, Merle Pastrick Linn of West Mifflin, Jason Pastrick of Boulder, CO, Alison (Al) Pastrick Marschke of Franklin Park, and Kirsten A. (Tom Funk) Pastrick, Shannon L. Pastrick and Eric D. Pastrick of Duquesne; grandchildren, Abigail (Jason) Linn Evey, Eric P. (Tiffany) Linn Jr., Brian E. (Jamie) Linn, and Caroline Marschke; five great grandchildren; sister, Mary Steimer Dale of Pittsburgh; sister-in-law, Jean Steimer of Ligonier; and cousins, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters-in-law, Edward Jr., Joseph (Esther), Merl (Pola), Glenn (Reath), Jean (Joan), Orvis, Paul (Marcie) and Felix.
Friends will be received Thursday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. in the Maloy-Schleifer Funeral Home, Inc., 915 Kennedy Avenue in Duquesne, 412-466-3300. A blessing service there on Friday at 11:30 a.m. will be followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at noon in St. Joseph Church in Duquesne with the Rev. John McKenna as celebrant. The family has suggested memorial contributions to the former United Cerebral Palsy Foundation now known as CLASS (Community Living and Support Services), 1400 South Braddock Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15218.

He was preceded in death by sister and brothers, Joanne Edgar (formerly of White Oak, PA), C. Hunter Harris (formerly of Houston, TX) and Jack Harris (formerly of Irwin, PA). A graduate of McKeesport Vocational High School, he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Punta Gorda, FL and Teamster’s Union Local #211. Mr. Harris was a retired fleet mechanic for the former Daily News. Ronald Wayne Corman, age 81, of Fort Myers, FL, died on Wednesday, October 5, 2022. He was born in McKeesport, PA on July 4, 1941 and is the son of the late Harry O. and Martha Louise Hunter Corman. He graduated from Duquesne High School and attended Waynesburg University and the University of Pittsburgh. Ronald proudly served in the United States Army and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal as a Sharpshooter. After serving in the United States Army, he retired from CSX after 32 years as a Locomotive Engineer. He was a member of numerous organizations including, the General Smedley D. Albert D. “Abby” Doehla, 77, of Carnegie, PA died Friday, October 7, 2022 at UPMC Mercy. Born in McKeesport, PA on August 5, 1945, he was the son of the late Albert R. “Pro” Doehla and Marie Lena Kasten Doehla. He was a retired veteran’s representative for Career Link, and loved serving his fellow veterans in his occupation. He is survived by his wife, Linda Schoen, his daughters, Katie and Rachel (Mike), his son, Chris (Megan), grandson Connor, nephew, Robert Parker, great nephew, Charlie, and great great nephews, Mason and Tate. He was preceded in death by his sister, Frances Bloss and his brother, Zane F. Doehla. Abby was a graduate of McKeesport High School and earned his bachelor’s degree at the California University of Pennsylvania and served his country in the U.S. Army as a veteran of the Vietnam War. Tonya L. Ayers, age 46, of McKeesport, went to be with the Lord on October 1, 2022, at home, after a year of hospitalizations and surgeries. Born July 25, 1976, in McKeesport was the beautiful daughter of Linda Ziino and the late James R. Ayers.
Tonya was a caring, compassionate and gentle person. Her favorite thing to do was to cook and feed anyone. Tonya was an avid cat lover and Pittsburgh Steeler fan; she will be greatly missed by many. She worked as a waitress and bartender for many local businesses. Tonya was very much a people person; she recently started making flower arrangements for everyone she knew.

Joseph Stephen Szalko, Jr., age 71, of Port Vue, died on Wednesday, October 5, 2022. He was born in McKeesport on October 27, 1950 and is the son of the late Joseph Stephen, Sr. and Katherine Lytle Szalko. He was a 1969 graduate of Duquesne High School and was employed at US Steel, Edgar Thompson Plant, in their railroad division. Joseph was very good in baseball in his younger years and played semi pro for the Zemps. He enjoyed collecting baseball cards and coins, and watching sports, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates. He also loved animals and especially his cat, Charlie.

Thomas John Knaus, 75, of North Huntingdon, passed away Saturday, October 8, 2022 at his home. Tom was born in McKeesport, Pa. on April 11, 1947. He was preceded in death by his parents, John L. Knaus and Lydia Matias Knaus and baby son, Thomas. He is survived by his best friend and wife of 54 years, Marlene Terek Knaus. He is also survived by his son, Kevin Knaus of N. Huntingdon and by his remarkable grandchildren Juliet, Samuel and Ian, of Indiana Twp. He is also survived by his younger sister, Kathy Jo of Spring City, Utah. Tom grew up in Glassport, and graduated from Glassport High School in 1965. Tom was a fine all around athlete and enjoyed all the sports teams in the area. He was an avid golfer still waiting for the elusive hole-in-one. Tom attended California State College and graduated in 1969 with a bachelor's degree in education. He also received his masters degree in 1974. Tom taught 33 years in the Duquesne School District as an Industrial Arts teacher. Tom was a veteran of the US Army Reserves, assigned to the 46H Replacement Company in Pittsburgh. He received his honorable discharge in 1976. Friends will be received from 2-7 on Tuesday at the James W. Shirley Funeral Home, 176 Clay Pike, North Huntingdon, PA 15642. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church. Interment will be private. Anthony M. DiVittorio, 89, of North Versailles, formerly of Braddock, died Wednesday October 5, 2022. Beloved son of the late Anthony and Angela DiVittorio. Loving brother of Marie (Ben) Cifone and the late Sam DiVittorio. Brother-in-law of Maggie DiVittorio. Dear uncle of Renee (Mike) Ansell, Leslie (Rick) Ethridge, Laurie (Barry) Wyckoff, Sam (Kathy) DiVittorio, and the late Mary Jo (the late Blake) Hadley. Anthony was a Professor of Music at Duquesne University for 42 years. For 18 months he was a Cryptologist in the Army stationed in Japan. Anthony traveled to New York City every August and then to Taiwan with a friend who was an opera singer for her upcoming concert series.
