In an era where we're being bombarded every day on our telephones by scams and on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram by hoaxes and propaganda, access to information is more important than ever.

This year was a very difficult one for everyone. At Tube City Community Media, we lost one of our best correspondents due to a family emergency, while another had to give up writing for us because of her daytime work obligations. That left us unable to cover some communities with the depth they deserve, and we're sorry about that.

But we've persisted and we are working to recruit several new writers — two of them have already had bylines recently and we're looking forward to more of their good work.

Cynthia Diane Bryant, 71, died Dec. 16, 2020. She was born to the late James & Mary E. Bryant on March 18, 1949 and was the beloved sister to William “Billy” Bryant (deceased).  She was raised and remained a much loved and adored resident of the West Mifflin (Riverview Homes Association) community. 

After graduating from West Mifflin North High School, Cynthia began her career at US Steel where she worked for a number of years.  After the closing of US Steel she devoted 30 years of service to the accounts payable department at PNC Bank, where she retired in 2015.  While maintaining her many roles, without complaint, Cynthia still found the time to double as the supervisor and seamstress for The Children of Praise Mime Ministry, a role which she immensely enjoyed.

Linda G. (White) Conaway, age 76, of Fayette City, formerly of Elrama and Elizabeth, passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2020 in Westmoreland Hospital. She was a member of Community of Christ Church in Fayette City and was a former secretary at Howard Hannah in Shadyside and Baw Plastics in Jefferson Hills. She enjoyed working with children and was a former nursery director at Round Hill Presbyterian Church. Born January 2, 1944 in Monongahela, she was a daughter of the late George and Vera (Dowler) White and wife of the late Donald "Chink" Conaway. She is survived by daughter, Gail R. (Robert) Zontek of Fayette City; grandsons, Zachary Ferrence of Belle Vernon and Jeremy (Juliana Macey) Ferrence of Fayette City; sister, Lola (Carl) Boja of Ohio; brother, Thomas (Mary) White of South Carolina; also, nieces and nephews.

Edward W. Lenhart, age 82, of Finleyville, passed away on Monday, December 21, 2020 at home. He was a retired industrial instrumentation technician for U.S. Steel in Clairton. He attended Westmoreland County Community College and Career Development classes, and enjoyed building and repairing computers. Born January 11, 1938 in Bitner, he was a son of the late Clark Lawrence and Clara Mae (Shultz) Lenhart. He is survived by his partner, Marla S. Wilkinson; daughter, Yvonne N. Lenhart of Canonsburg; stepdaughters, June Sines of Burgettstown and Elesha Cillo of Clairton; stepsons, Joshua (Sara) Cillo of Pittsburgh and Nathan (Emily) Cillo of Pittsburgh; eight step-grandchildren; also, nieces and nephews.

Helsel, 82, of West Mifflin, died Dec. 20, 2020.  He is the son of the late Earl and Alice (Dick) Helsel.  He is survived by his beloved wife Linda (Harbst) Helsel; daughter Pamela (the late John) Relja; grandson Sean Relja;  and sister Marion (the late Troy) Cambell.  He was preceded in death by his son Craig Helsel.  Wayne was retired from US Steel Irvin Works.  Friends received Wojciechowski Funeral Home, Glassport on Wed. from 11 to 1.  Interment following Restland Memorial Park.

Dwojak, 59, of North Huntingdon, passed away Sunday, December 20, 2020 at Excela Health Westmoreland Hospital.  He was born September 15, 1961 in Pittsburgh, a son of the late Theodore and Renilda (Chontos) Dwojak.  Mark was a graduate from Norwin Sr. High School, Class of 1979.  Prior to his retirement, he was a laborer for Local 373 and a carpenter for Irwin Interiors Systems Inc. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and skeet shooting.

Junius “Jay” Breitinger

Junius “Jay” Breitinger, 74, of Irwin, passed away Thursday, December 17, 2020.

He was born October 1, 1946 in Owensboro, Kentucky, the son of the late Harry and Anna Louise (Meadows) Breitinger. Jay was a member of Mars Hill Baptist Church, Sewickley Township, and a proud Navy veteran that served during the Vietnam War. Throughout his working life Jay was a police officer in Washington D.C., a steel worker for U.S. Steel, McKeesport, and a truck driver for Munson Trucking.

He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, and celebrating the 4th of July with family enjoying fireworks. Jay liked traveling, and took many trips visiting Kentucky and enjoyed good Kentucky Bourbon.

Dennis Paul Bernhardy, 81, of East McKeesport died Tuesday, December 15, 2020 at his home.

Dennis was born June 10, 1939 in East McKeesport, PA.  He graduated in 1957 from East McKeesport High School.  He then went on to follow in his father’s footsteps of carpentry and employment with the National Tube Works Mill in McKeesport. 

Dennis was actively involved in his community, a devoted Christian and member of Linway United Presbyterian Church, a member of the Freemasons, delivered for Meals-On-Wheels for many years, decades-long member with multiple volunteer fire departments, a steadfast leader in multiple youth sport programs, and most importantly, a dedicated father and husband.

He loved to garden and go deer hunting at his log cabin in Bedford County. He was well-known for singing with his sister Beckie the song, "There Was A Little Mouse Who Lived on A Hill." Born October 21, 1937 in McKeesport, he was a son of the late George M. and Annabelle (Wilson) Shawl and husband of the late Dorothy "D.J." Shawl. He is survived by children, Jayne Ann Fowler of Finleyville, Jim (Kim) Shawl of Lower Speers, Janis (Dan Salaj) Salka of Finleyville, Nancy (the late Jeffrey) Fetchen of Bunola and George M. (Beth) Shawl of Everett; grandchildren, Jason, Justin, Jarrod, James, Julie, George, Jordan and Dakota; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Beckie Pavlick of Baldwin and Martha (Ken) Beachy of Jefferson Hills; also, nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by grandson, Steven, and sister, Emma Kay Henline. Visitation is private. Doris Ann Ganzy, age 73 of North Huntingdon died December 19, 2020 at her home. She was born July 7, 1947 in Duquesne, a daughter of the late Frank and Ann Vice Margita. Doris was a member of St. Stephens Church, North Huntingdon. She was a registered nurse working at Braddock, Mercy, Shadyside and Forbes Hospital. At age 45, she enlisted in the U.S. Army and served our country during the Persian Gulf War as the second in charge of a burn unit. She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond, one son, Michael. She is survived by one daughter, Anna Marie Gianfrancesco.  Visitation James W.
