Agnes lost both of her parents and was placed in Belvedere Catholic Orphanage when she was nine years old, along with her two younger sisters. She spent nine years there and obtained a scholarship and then obtained a teaching license. She was teaching elementary grades at St. Kevin's School in Goulds, Newfoundland when she met and married her husband, Ron.
