Leona J. Shevke of Liberty Borough died January 24, 2017 at LGAR Health & Rehab Center in Turtle Creek. Born in Austria, she was the daughter of the late Wasyl and Anna (Michigan) Smolinsky and the wife of the late Erfan Shevke. Leona was a lifetime member of St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Byzantine Catholic Parish, dedicated pyrohy maker for the church, and former ladies auxiliary member of Liberty Borough Fire Department. She was a wonderful cook and her homemade cherry pies were a special treat. Leona enjoyed sewing, crochet, and embroidery. She taught herself how to play harmonica, and on holidays, especially Christmas Eve, she would perform to the joy of her family. A world traveler, she accompanied her husband to places including, Cyprus and Europe. She also spoke three languages. She is survived by daughter, Lee (Ronald) Stebick, grandson, Ronald Anthony Stebick, sisters, Mary (the late Henry) Belback, Olive (the late John) Benyak, Genevieve (the late Andrew) Yuna, and Pearl (the late Joe) Rolnik; goddaughter, Joanne Wakefield and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by sister, Jean Konias; brothers, Stanley Smolnicky and Michael Smolinsky. Family and friends will be received at Willig Funeral Home & Crematory on Thursday, January 26, 2017 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Requiem Divine Liturgy will be Friday, January 27, 2017, 11 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church with Rev. Donald Kovach, age 84 of Port Vue, passed away on Saturday, January 21, 2017 at Kane Regional Center in McKeesport. Born to Ilona and Paul Kovach in McKeesport where the Youghiogheny meets the Monongahela, Donald was in his later childhood raised by his grandparents in No. 9, an unincorporated coal mining town near Farmington, W.Va. Growing up near the small town of Farmington, near Fairmont, he would meet his future wife, Helen Jean "Bookie" Pasko, in high school. Shortly after graduating in 1950 and returning to McKeesport, his father Paul "exaggerated" his son's age so that Donald could gain employment at National Tube Works.

Matthew G. Gazdich, age 38, of Christy Park died January 12, 2017 at home. Born June 6, 1978 in McKeesport, he was the son of George P. Gazdich and Dagmar (Hansen) Oglesby. Matthew worked at the CCAC South Campus as a computer lab technician and taught Java programming. He attended Holy Family Polish National Catholic Church. He loved his animals, Cujo, Mouseface, Sadie, and Cocoa. He enjoyed writing, trail bicycling, and his “pen collection.”

John G. “Lobo” Barretta, 88, of McKeesport, died Jan. 11, 2017, at UPMC McKeesport. Born Mar. 6, 1928, in Turtle Creek, he was the son of the late Earnest L. and Mary (Lebanno) Barretta and the husband of Aurora (Marchetti) Barretta.
John was a member of St. Patrick Church. A U.S. army veteran, he served as a medic in the Korean War. Returning home from overseas, he became a barber in Wilmerding, a trade that he would continue, at least part time, for the rest of his life.

Clyde E. Haidle, age 74, of McKeesport died January 7, 2017, at Concordia Lutheran Hospice. Born February 12, 1942, in McKeesport, he was the son of the late William and Annabelle (Kelly) Tomak and the fiancé of Diane J. (Pilatowski) Borland, for over 27 years. Clyde was retired from Coach USA where he was a bus driver for over 25 years. He was a member of the Faith Community Christian Church, in Moon Twp. He was a US Airforce veteran, serving during 1960 - 1964.

Mary Stipanovic, beloved sister and aunt, died January 6, 2017 at Redstone Highlands in Greensburg, PA at the age of 95. She was formerly from McKeesport and Liberty Borough. Mary graduated from McKeesport High School and from Grace Martin Business School. She retired from the McKeesport Hospital Human Resources Department and was the secretary to the head of McKeesport Hospital nursing.

Lois Jean Zetler, age 77 of Glassport, passed away on Friday, January 6, 2017 at UPMC McKeesport. Born June 24, 1939 in McKeesport, she was the daughter of the late Elmer E. and Catherine (Reid) Wilson, and loving wife of the late Jack Zetler. Lois worked as a Nurse’s Aide for UPMC McKeesport, where she retired after many years of dedicated service. In her earlier years, she and her husband Jack owned their own traveling carnival where she enjoyed traveling across the state for events.

Mildred L. Mercurio, age 88, of McKeesport, died Dec. 9th, 2016, at Riverside Nursing Center in McKeesport. She was a daughter of the late Steven and Della (Novosel) Keresman. Mildred was the beloved wife of the late Patrick J. Mercurio, who died Oct. 24th, of this year.
Mildred was a member of St. Patrick Church. She was a homemaker, wonderful cook, and “the best mother in the whole world”.

Duane H. Carter, Sr., 76, of McKeesport died on Thursday December 8, 2016 at home. Born April 26, 1940 in White Oak he was the son of the late George Edmund and Elizabeth (Hudak) Carter. He was the husband of the living Rosalie (Canova) Carter. He was a graduate of Wilmerding High School and served in the US Navy. He worked at four steel mills including National Tube, Firth Sterling, Copper Mill, and the East Pittsburgh Westinghouse plant. He then later retired from McKeesport Messenger Service after 20 years.

George A. “Lefty” Cherepko, age 68, of White Oak, died December 4, 2016, at home. Born April 1, 1948, in McKeesport, he was the son of the late George A. and Shirley (Wisser) Cherepko and the husband of Alberta (Hinick) Cherepko. Lefty was retired from Frank Fuhrer Wholesale, where he was a truck driver and at the same time he worked at Myers Coach Line, as a bus driver. He was a US Army veteran, serving during the Vietnam War. He enjoyed playing cards, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle and more than anything else, he loved going on cruises with his beloved wife. He also loved the McKeesport Tigers Football Team and was in charge of running the chains on the sidelines.

Betty J. Daugherty died Nov. 29, in Glassport. Born April 22, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Evelyn (Magee) Daugherty.
For 41 years, Betty worked as a bookkeeper for Southland Dodge and Yarborough Development. She was a loving sister.
Suvivors include siblings, Shirley Scott, Hazel, Judy Carlson, Eugene, Kathy, Richard, Janet Frias, Patrick and Kenneth; nieces and nephews: great nieces and nephews.

Olive (Faulds) Dishong, age 81, of West Mifflin, died November 30, 2016 at AHN Jefferson Hospital. Born October 9, 1935 in Homestead, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Florence (Link) Faulds and wife of the late Donald Dishong, Sr. Olive worked as a cashier for Hills and then most recently at Kennywood. She loved concerts and music, especially gospel. She enjoyed to play cards, sometimes alone and also with her family.
